After a burglary

Burgled? Here is what to do right away

Coming home to a break-in is a shock. These steps keep you safe, help the police and protect your insurance claim.

Coming home to a break-in is a shock. These steps keep you safe, help the police and protect your insurance claim.

Straight away

If you think the burglar may still be inside, do not go in. Get somewhere safe and call 999.

If they have gone, call the police on 101, or report it online, and write down your crime reference number. Your insurer will ask for it.

Try not to touch the door, windows or anything the burglar may have handled until the police say it is fine.

In the next hour

Photograph the damage and anything that has been moved, before you tidy up.

Make a list of what is missing, with receipts or photos if you have them.

If your bank cards or phone were taken, cancel the cards and change the passwords on your email and banking apps.

Get the property secure

If a door has been forced or glass broken, the property is not secure. A locksmith can change the locks, repair the door or frame, and board up a window or door until it can be fixed properly.

If your keys were taken, change the locks the same day. Whoever has them may know where you live.

Need your home secured now?

We are open 24 hours and usually with you in 30 to 60 minutes. You get photos and an invoice for your insurer.

Make your claim

Call your insurer as soon as you can. Give them your crime reference number, your photos, your list of missing items and the locksmith’s invoice.

Ask what lock standard your policy needs. Many ask for a BS 3621 mortice lock on wooden doors and a TS007 3-star or Sold Secure Diamond cylinder on uPVC and composite doors.

Stop it happening again

Most break-ins happen through a door or window that was easy to open. A security survey shows you the weak spots, and an anti-snap cylinder is one of the cheapest upgrades you can make.
