Quick answer

Do I need a new lock or just a new cylinder?

On most uPVC and composite doors, and on doors with a nightlatch, only the cylinder needs changing. That is the part the key goes into. On a wooden door with a mortice lock, the whole lock is replaced.

Self-check

Check your front door in 30 seconds

Three quick checks tell you if your locks meet the standards most UK insurers ask for.

  1. Look at the face of the cylinderA Kitemark with three stars, or the words Sold Secure Diamond, means it is anti-snap rated (TS007 3-star or SS312 Diamond).
  2. Check how far it sticks outIf the cylinder stands out more than about 3mm beyond the handle, it is easier to snap. A correctly sized one sits almost flush.
  3. Wooden door? Check the faceplateOpen the door and look at the metal plate on its edge. A Kitemark and BS 3621 means the mortice lock meets the usual insurance standard.
  4. Not sure?Call us and describe it, or ask us to check every door when we visit.

FAQs

Questions about lock changes

Anything else? Call 07958 033395 and ask.

What locks does my insurer want?

Many UK policies ask for a BS 3621 mortice lock on wooden doors, and a TS007 3-star or Sold Secure Diamond anti-snap cylinder on uPVC and composite doors. Check your policy wording and we will match it.

Can one key open all my doors?

Yes. We can fit keyed-alike locks so one key opens every door.

How long does a lock change take?

Usually 20 to 40 minutes per door.

Do I need a new lock or just a new cylinder?

On most uPVC and composite doors, changing the cylinder is enough. We check before we start.

Will a new lock affect my home insurance?

Fitting locks to the standard on your policy helps. We tell you which standard each lock meets, and put it on your invoice.

Can you change a lock without the key?

Yes. If you are locked out, we open the door first, check you live there, then fit the new lock.
