Locksmith scams: how to protect yourself

How to spot a rogue locksmith, and the questions to ask before anyone sets off.

How to spot a rogue locksmith, and the questions to ask before anyone sets off.

When you are locked out, you want someone there fast. That is exactly when rogue traders take advantage. A few questions on the phone protect you from most problems.

Ask for the price before anyone sets off

A proper locksmith can give you a price, or a clear price range, once you have described the job. Be careful with adverts that only mention a very low call-out fee. The fee is often followed by a much bigger bill once the door is open.

Ask about non-destructive entry

Most lockouts can be opened without drilling the lock. If someone says yours must be drilled, ask why. Drilling and fitting a new lock is sometimes needed, but it should be explained and priced before it happens.

Check the company is real

  • A company name you can look up, for example on Companies House.
  • A phone number that is answered, not a call centre that passes your job on.
  • Membership of a trade body such as the Master Locksmiths Association, which you can check on its website.
  • Genuine reviews from local customers.

Get it in writing

Ask for an invoice that shows the company name, what was done, the parts fitted and the price. You will need it if you claim on your insurance, and it is your proof if anything goes wrong.

Pay by card if you can

Card payments can be disputed with your bank. Be wary of anyone who will only take cash, or who asks you to pay before the work is done.

If something does not feel right

You do not have to let anyone start work. If you think you have been overcharged or misled, contact Citizens Advice, which can also pass the details to Trading Standards.
